Traditions - close up
Native peoples have been fishing this part of the Columbia River for something like 11,000 years. It's a tradition that continues despite the dams that have flooded the Gorge. These guys may have gotten here in a modern truck and travel trailer, but here they are building the classic platform for dip-net fishing. Speaking of traditions, my uncle Chet Coats (who died in 2005) photographed the Wishram and Wasco peoples fishing at Celilo falls before it was submerged. Here are links to info on Celilo Falls and the John Day Dam. |
